Is There a Tax Credit for Home Window Film?

Window film once qualified for a federal energy tax credit, and many homeowners still ask about it. Here's where things stand as of 2026. Tax rules change, so confirm with the IRS or a tax professional before you rely on any credit.

The short answer

As of 2026, there is no federal tax credit for installing window film on your home.

What changed

  • Earlier years: the federal Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit (Section 25C) covered some qualifying window films, typically 10% of the film's cost up to a lifetime cap, not including installation.
  • 2023 to 2025: the credit was expanded and renamed the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, but it covered qualifying exterior windows and skylights, not window film.
  • From 2026: federal law ended the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit for improvements placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Where you can still save

  • Utility rebates. Some electric utilities offer rebates for solar-control window film, especially in hot climates. Check your utility's efficiency or rebate page before you buy.
  • State and local programs. Some states and cities run their own efficiency incentives. The DSIRE database (dsireusa.org) lists programs by state.
  • Businesses. Film on commercial buildings may be treated differently under business tax rules. Ask your accountant. One thing to know: some commercial projects used to claim the Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Deduction (Section 179D) for film installed as part of a building's energy upgrades. Federal law ended that deduction for property whose construction begins after June 30, 2026 (IRS FAQ). Some installers' pages still advertise it, so check with your accountant before counting on it.

Keep your paperwork anyway

Rebate programs usually ask for an itemized receipt showing the film brand and product, the square footage, and the film's performance figures (such as solar heat gain coefficient). Keep the product name and spec sheet with your receipt.

The savings that don't need a credit

Even without a tax break, solar film pays back through lower cooling costs and less fading of floors and furniture. See how much home window tint costs and our picks by need.
