Editorial policy and how TintCenter makes money

TintCenter has two parts: a free reference on window film (tint laws, brands and specs, a document archive and an industry timeline) and an online store that sells film by the roll. The store pays for the reference. This page explains how we keep the two apart, how we check what we publish, and how we fix mistakes.

How TintCenter makes money

  • We sell window film. TintCenter LLC sells automotive, home and office, decorative, wrap and paint protection film by the roll, shipped from Castro Valley, California. We started selling because readers wanted to try the films they read about and asked us for samples. We're an authorized online dealer for the brands we sell.
  • We refer DIY kit buyers to SnapTint. We don't sell precut kits; links to SnapTint are marked as such. SnapTint is a separate company. The two sites link to each other where their products fit together, and no money changes hands for those links.
  • We don't sell placements. No maker pays to appear in the tint laws, the brand and film pages, the document archive or the timeline, or to be ranked, described or compared in a particular way. We don't accept sponsored content.
  • No ads. The site doesn't run advertising networks.

How the reference and the store are kept apart

  • Every brand we can find is covered, whether or not we sell it. Film pages list films from other makers alongside ours, and say plainly when we don't sell a film.
  • Where we sell a film, a "Shop" button marks it as a store link. Lists that put films we sell first say so.
  • Specs come from the maker's published data, with the source and its date shown. We don't adjust a maker's figures, including for films we sell.
  • Tint-law pages never depend on what we stock: the limits are the state's, with the statute and official sources beside them.

How we check what we publish

  • A source and a date on every research page. Every law, brand and film page names its primary source (a statute, a regulation, an agency page or the maker's own document) and the date we last checked it. A page without both isn't published.
  • When sources disagree, we show them all. If a statute, an agency and a published chart give different answers, we list each answer with its source instead of picking one.
  • Laws are rechecked on a schedule. We check for tint-law changes every month and reread states against their statutes in rotation; a changed state is marked "changed recently" for a year.
  • History is sourced entry by entry. Each timeline event and brand history entry links to where it came from.

Corrections

If something on TintCenter is wrong or out of date, email research@tintcenter.com (or use the contact page) with a link to your source. We check it, fix the page, update its "last checked" date and, for a change that matters (a law limit, a spec, an ownership fact), note the correction on the page.

Who's responsible

TintCenter's founder edits the reference and signs off every law change. Research questions: research@tintcenter.com.

TintCenter isn't legal advice. Tint laws are enforced by each state; check with your state's agency or an installer before you apply film.
