Iowa lets drivers tint front side windows to 50% (effective July 1, 2026)

Iowa has relaxed one of the strictest window tint rules in the country. Since July 1, 2026, the front side windows of a car only need to let in at least 50% of light. Before that, they had to let in at least 70%, which ruled out almost every aftermarket film.

What changed

House File 766 rewrites Iowa Code section 321.438(2). It passed the House in March 2025 (72-25) and the Senate on March 23, 2026 (31-16). Governor Kim Reynolds signed it on May 15, 2026, and it took effect on July 1, 2026.

The law now sets two numbers:

  • Front side windows (the windows to the driver's immediate left and right, and any front vent windows): at least 50% light transmittance.
  • Windshield: at least 70% light transmittance, as before.

Before the change, the statute only banned windows that were "excessively dark or reflective" and left the number to the Iowa DOT, whose rule set 70% for both the windshield and the front side windows.

What it means for drivers

A front side window, film and glass together, can now meter as low as 50%. Most factory glass lets in 70-85% of light, so a light film can fit under the limit; check the combined reading, not just the film's label. Vehicles driven by law enforcement officers on duty are still exempt.

What didn't change

  • Iowa still doesn't limit the windows behind the driver.
  • The windshield limit stays at 70%.
  • The fine is still the scheduled fine in Iowa Code 805.8A; HF 766 doesn't change it.

What isn't settled yet

Update, September 29, 2026: the Iowa DOT rule (Iowa Administrative Code 761-450.7, last amended in 2022) still said 70% for the front side windows, and it still says no new medical exemptions have been granted since July 4, 2012. The new statute sets 50% directly, but the rule hadn't been updated. We'll update our page when the DOT revises it.
