Paint protection film (PPF) is a clear, self-healing urethane layer applied over your car's paint. It's the most effective protection against rock chips, but it isn't cheap. Here's how to decide whether it's worth it for you.
What PPF protects against
- Rock chips from highway driving, the main reason people buy it.
- Light scratches and swirl marks, which self-heal with heat.
- Bug splatter, bird droppings and tar, which can etch clear coat.
- UV fading of the paint underneath.
It won't stop dents from impacts, and deep scratches through the film can't heal, though the film can be replaced panel by panel.
When it's worth it
- New or recently painted cars you plan to keep, or want to sell in top condition.
- Lots of highway miles, or roads with gravel and winter grit.
- Expensive or hard-to-match paint, like tri-coat, matte or custom colors.
- Leased cars, where chips can mean charges at turn-in.
When it may not be
- Older cars with chipped or faded paint, unless you correct the paint first.
- Cars driven mostly short distances in town.

| Full front | Full hood, full fenders, bumper, mirrors, headlights | $1,800 to $3,000 |

| Full body | Every painted panel | $5,000 to $8,000 or more |
PPF vs ceramic coating
They do different jobs. A ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that makes paint glossy and easy to clean, but it won't stop rock chips. PPF stops chips and light scratches. Many owners put a coating on top of PPF for both benefits.
How long it lasts
Quality films typically last 7 to 10 years and carry manufacturer warranties against yellowing, cracking and peeling. Wash by hand or touchless, avoid pressure-washing film edges up close, and keep bird droppings from sitting on it.
