Why Tint Your Car? 6 Real Benefits

Most people tint their car for looks or privacy. The bigger payoffs are comfort and protection. Here are the six benefits that matter most.

1. A cooler car

A car parked in the sun heats up fast, and air conditioning takes a while to catch up. Quality film rejects a large share of the sun's heat before it gets inside. Ceramic and other infrared-blocking films do this best, even in lighter, legal shades, so darker isn't the only way to keep cool.

2. UV protection for your skin

Side windows block much less UV than the laminated windshield. Most quality window films block 99% of UV rays, which matters on long commutes. The Skin Cancer Foundation recognizes some window films as effective UV protection.

3. Less glare

Tint cuts glare from low sun and bright headlights, which reduces eye strain on long drives. Choose a shade that still lets you see clearly at night.

4. Privacy and security

Darker rear windows keep bags and electronics out of plain view, which makes a car a less tempting target for a smash-and-grab.

5. A longer-lasting interior

Sun and heat fade and crack dashboards, leather and upholstery. Blocking UV and heat slows that damage and helps a car hold its value.

6. Shatter resistance

Window film helps hold broken glass together in an accident or break-in, so fewer loose shards fly into the cabin.

Before you tint: check the law

Every state limits how dark you can go, and the limits differ for front side, rear side and rear windows, and for cars versus SUVs. Look up the rules on our tint laws by state page before you choose a shade.

Choosing a film

For the most heat rejection at a legal shade, look at the total solar energy rejection figure on each film, not just its darkness. Our guide to types of window film explains the options, and you can shop car window tint by the roll.
