Arizona window tint law

How dark can window tint be in Arizona?

Darkness is measured as visible light transmission (VLT): the percentage of light that gets through. A lower number means darker tint.

Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
Front side windows Must let in more than 33% of light.
Back side windows Any darkness is allowed. Any darkness is allowed.
Rear window Any darkness is allowed. Any darkness is allowed.

Tolerance: Plus or minus 3% on the front side windows: 33% light with a 3% tolerance, and 35% reflectance with a 3% tolerance (A.R.S. 28-959.01).

How reflective can tint be?

Front side windows
Must not be more than 35% reflective.
Back side windows
Must not be more than 35% reflective.

Other Arizona tint rules

Restricted colors
Red and amber are not allowed on the tint strip at the top of the windshield. The law names no colors for the other windows.
Side mirrors
Dual side mirrors are required if the back window is tinted.
Film certification
Film manufacturers don't need to certify the film they sell in the state.
Sticker
No sticker identifying legal tint is required.
Medical exemption
Apply to ADOT's Medical Review Program with form 40-1511, certified by an MD, DO, naturopathic physician or ophthalmologist. The exemption covers vehicles you own and vehicles you regularly ride in, a certificate must be in each vehicle, and it never covers the windshield. Enforcement and penalties in Arizona

Enforcement
Police can stop you for tint alone. Anyone who sells or installs film must tell customers clearly that film on the front side windows may be illegal in some states.
Penalties
Tint tickets are generally handled as civil traffic violations, with fines set by the court; sources vary on the amount.
