How dark can window tint be in Indiana?

Darkness is measured as visible light transmission (VLT): the percentage of light that gets through. A lower number means darker tint.

No tint colors are banned.
Side mirrors
No side-mirror requirement.
Film certification
Film manufacturers must certify the film they sell in the state. Ask your installer for certified film.
Sticker
No sticker identifying legal tint is required.
Medical exemption
Carry a certification from a physician or optometrist licensed in Indiana that the owner or a regular passenger must be shielded from the sun. It must be renewed every year. No state permit is needed (IC 9-19-19-4(b)).

Enforcement and penalties in Indiana

Enforcement
Police can stop you to check your tint, but you, your passengers and the vehicle can't be searched or detained only because of the tint (IC 9-19-19-4(f)). Installers may not install illegal film unless the customer gives them a physician's or optometrist's statement.
Penalties
Commonly reported as a Class C infraction, with a fine of up to $500. Many courts let you remove the film and show proof to reduce or dismiss the ticket.
