How dark can window tint be in Kansas?
Darkness is measured as visible light transmission (VLT): the percentage of light that gets through. A lower number means darker tint.

How reflective can tint be?
- Front side windows
- No metallic or mirrored appearance.
- Back side windows
- No metallic or mirrored appearance.
Other Kansas tint rules
- Restricted colors
- Red, yellow and amber are not allowed on the tint strip at the top of the windshield. The law names no colors for the other windows.
- Side mirrors
- Dual side mirrors are required if the back window is tinted.
- Film certification
- Film manufacturers don't need to certify the film they sell in the state.
- Sticker
- Stickers identifying legal tint are recommended but not required.
- Medical exemption
- Only for clear UV-blocking film: film that lets in at least 78% of light (70% with the glass) can go on any window, including the windshield, if you carry a signed statement from a licensed physician or optometrist that it's necessary for your health. The law has no exemption for darker tint.
Enforcement and penalties in Kansas
- Enforcement
- If you're cited for clear UV film without a medical statement, you have 60 days to show the statement in court or remove the film, and the citation is dismissed (K.S.A. 8-1749a(d)).
- Penalties
- A misdemeanor (8-1749a(h)).
