How the Utah tint law has changed

The changes we could document, newest first, each with its source. Where we only know that our older records differ from today's law, we say so rather than guess a date.

  1. Law change Front side limit lowered from 43% to 35%

S.B. 149 let front side windows go darker: from at least 43% light transmission to at least 35%, the limit today.

Source: Utah Legislature, S.B. 149 (2022), enrolled bill

  2. Proposed Request for darker front tint tabled

An Orem resident with skin cancer on the left side of her face asked lawmakers to allow darker tint than the 43% front-side limit. The Utah State Police opposed it and legislators didn't vote on it. The limit was lowered ten years later.

Films of 35% VLT or lighter: legal on every window of a car in Utah. Darker films for the rear windows are in the full collection. All car window film.
