XPEL started in San Antonio in 1997 as a software company, designing vehicle patterns so paint protection film could be cut to fit before it touched the car. It began selling its own film in 2007, and in 2011 launched ULTIMATE, which it describes as the industry's first self-healing paint protection film. Its shares have traded on Nasdaq since July 2019.

XPEL added PRIME car window film in 2017 and architectural and security film for homes and businesses in 2018. Its May 2023 US spec sheet lists five PRIME lines: XR PLUS, XR Black, XR Blue, HP Black and CS Black. TintCenter sells XPEL paint protection film.

Heat rejected = total solar energy rejected (TSER), lowest to highest across the line's shades, from the maker's published specs (each line's page names the source and its date). Darker shades usually reject more. Figures are for film on clear glass, so treat comparisons as a guide.
