Solar Gard starts in San Diego (1975 or 1977)
The business that became Solar Gard Specialty Films began in San Diego. Sources differ on the year: Solar Gard's own literature says it has made window film in California "since 1975" (2010), while the San Diego Business Journal (2011) dates the start to 1977.

Bekaert buys the business
Belgium's Bekaert bought the Specialty Films business of Material Sciences Corporation, including its San Diego coating and laminating plants, and built it into Solar Gard Specialty Films.

Solar Gard True Grey non-reflective car film introduced
Bekaert Specialty Films extended its non-reflective automotive line with Solar Gard True Grey, a neutral grey meant to match factory-tinted glass without interfering with satellite signals.

Saint-Gobain agrees to buy Solar Gard from Bekaert
Bekaert agreed to sell its Specialty Films business, including the Solar Gard brand and plants in San Diego, Zulte (Belgium) and Suzhou (China), to Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics.
